United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)

Overview:
UNIFIL, active since 2006, monitors the 121-km “Blue Line” border between Lebanon and Israel. Its mission is to
prevent hostilities, ensuring that neither weapons nor fighters operate in the monitored areas.

Personnel and Operations:
The force comprises over 10,000 personnel, both military and civilian, from 50 different countries. Though
armed, peacekeepers only use force when necessary for their own protection or to safeguard civilians. Any
violations are reported to the UN Security Council.

Criticism:
UNIFIL has faced criticism from the U.S. and Israel for its inability to prevent Hezbollah from amassing rockets.

Recent Escalation:
As part of its operations against Hezbollah, the Israeli military positioned itself close to a UNIFIL base,
increasing the danger to peacekeepers. Despite Israel’s request to relocate, UNIFIL declined, stating it would
not move from its positions.

In the latest incident, an Israeli tank shell struck a UN observation post and the entrance to a bunker at a
UNIFIL base in Naqoura, Lebanon, injuring peacekeepers sheltering inside. Both Hezbollah and Israeli forces
have been using the same area, escalating tensions and complicating the mission.
