The Typhon Weapons System, also referred to as the Strategic Mid-Range Fires (SMRF) System, is a sophisticated weapon platform under
development by the U.S. Navy. Below are its main features and capabilities:

Capabilities and Components
Purpose:
- The Typhon system is designed for both missile defense and
maritime targeting. - It supports the launch of the Standard Missile 6 (SM-6) and the
Tomahawk Land Attack Missile.
Configuration:
- A complete Typhon battery consists of four launchers, a command
post, and vehicles for reloading and support, all mounted on
trailers. - The system relies on external sources for targeting data.
1. Launcher System:
- The Typhon launchers are based on the Mk 41 Vertical Launch System (VLS), commonly used on various U.S. Navy and allied ships.
- The Mk 41 VLS is compatible with multiple types of containerized missiles, allowing for future integration of new missile
types.
Missiles Details
- Standard Missile 6 (SM-6):
- Range: Approximately 370 kilometers (230 miles).
- Functions: Provides defense against ballistic missiles and can target ships.
- Tomahawk Land Attack Missile:
- Purpose: A long-range cruise missile intended for deep inland strikes.
- Launch Platforms: Can be launched from naval ships or submarines.
Characteristics:
- Range: Up to 2,400 kilometers (1,500 miles).
- Flight Profile: Travels at subsonic speeds and maintains a low altitude to evade radar detection.
- Guidance: Uses a combination of satellite navigation and Terrain Contour Matching (TERCOM) radar.
- Propulsion: Features a solid propellant for initial launch, transitioning to a turbofan engine for sustained flight, which
emits minimal heat to reduce infrared detection. - Maneuverability: Capable of complex maneuvers to evade radar, flying at altitudes of 30–90 meters (100–300 feet).
- Warhead: Can carry either conventional or nuclear payloads.
Recent Developments
The Philippine Army has indicated that the Typhon Weapons System, deployed by the U.S. for recent joint exercises, will soon
be withdrawn from the Philippines.
