Civil Registration System (CRS) 2023 Report

The Registrar General of India (RGI) released the report “Vital Statistics of India Based on the Civil Registration System (CRS) 2023.”
It highlights trends in births, deaths, and sex ratio across India.

Key Findings

1. Births

  • Total Births Registered (2023): 2.52 crore
    ↓ Around 2.32 lakh fewer than 2022.
  • Birth Registration Coverage: 98.4% — near universal.
  • Institutional Births: 74.7% of total registered births.

2. Deaths

  • Total Deaths Registered (2023): 86.6 lakh
  1. Slightly up from 86.5 lakh in 2022.
  2. 2021 spike (102.2 lakh deaths) linked to the COVID-19 second wave.

3. Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB)

(Number of female births per 1,000 male births)

  • Lowest SRB: Jharkhand (899), Bihar (900), Telangana (906), Maharashtra (909), Gujarat (910), Haryana (911), Mizoram (911).
  • Highest SRB: Arunachal Pradesh (1,085), Nagaland (1,007), Goa (973), Tripura (972), Kerala (967).
  • Trend: Bihar continues to record the lowest SRB since 2020, indicating persistent gender imbalance.

4. Timely Registration (Within 21 Days)

  • >90% Timely Registration: Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Goa, Punjab, etc. (11 States/UTs).
  • 80–90% Range: Odisha, Mizoram, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh.
  • 50–80% Range: 14 States.
