Concerns Over APAAR ID Implementation
Parents and activists have expressed concerns that the Ministry of Education’s
Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) ID, intended for school
students, may become difficult to opt out from, despite being officially voluntary.
About APAAR ID ; APAAR is a unique identification system designed for all
students in India. It is part of the ‘One Nation, One Student ID’ initiative launched by
the Union government, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Key Features: APAAR functions as a lifelong academic passport, consolidating a
student’s academic records, achievements, and credentials in one place.
Each student is assigned a permanent 12-digit ID that records degrees,
scholarships, awards, and other academic credits.
This ID remains valid throughout a student’s educational journey, facilitating a
seamless transition between different educational levels.
How APAAR Works
- Schools: Record and manage students’ academic data, achievements, and extracurricular activities.
- Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and Skill Institutes: Access students’ academic history for admissions and
recruitment purposes. - Students: Store and retrieve academic records digitally, including co-curricular accomplishments.
Benefits to Students
- Unified Academic Identity: A single platform consolidates academic records.
- Efficient Record-Keeping: Simplifies documentation for students, parents, and educators.
- Digital Repository: Securely stores academic achievements.
- Seamless Academic Mobility: Ensures smooth transitions between educational institutions.
Data Security and Confidentiality
- APAAR prioritizes data security, sharing information only with necessary government agencies.
- Consent-based document sharing ensures students control their information.
- Academic progress tracking allows students to monitor their performance, enabling personalized study plans and real-time analytics.
Enrollment Process
- Schools facilitate enrollment with parental consent, which can be withdrawn at any time.
- The government assures that data will only be shared with authorized agencies when necessary.
- All collected student data is stored in the centrally managed District Information for Education portal.
- APAAR is designed to streamline academic documentation while ensuring security and transparency. However, ongoing
concerns about its opt-out feasibility and data privacy require further government clarification to reassure parents and students.
