Why in News?

Recently, five beaches in Maharashtra received the international Blue Flag certification, recognising their adherence to global standards of
cleanliness, environmental management, and sustainable tourism.

🌍 About Blue Flag Certification

Governing Body: Foundation for Environment Education (FEE), Denmark.

Launch:

  • Began in France in 1985.
  • Expanded outside Europe in 2001.

Nature: A globally recognised eco-label awarded to beaches, marinas, and sustainable tourism boats that meet stringent environmental,
educational, safety, and accessibility standards.

Mission: To promote sustainability in the tourism sector through environmental education, protection, and eco-friendly development practices.

đź§© Criteria (33 Parameters under 4 Broad Categories)

  1. Water Quality: Regular testing and compliance with international water quality standards.
  2. Environmental Management: Waste disposal systems, biodiversity conservation, and eco-friendly infrastructure.
  3. Environmental Education: Awareness campaigns and public information boards for visitors.
  4. Safety and Services: Lifeguards, first aid, accessibility for all, and cleanliness standards.

🇮🇳 India and Blue Flag Beaches

India joined the Blue Flag programme in 2018, led by the Society of Integrated Coastal Management (SICOM) under the Ministry of
Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
