Overview of the Hellfire Missile

Recent Development:
India recently finalized an agreement with the United States to acquire 170 AGM-114R Hellfire missiles.

What is the Hellfire Missile?

The AGM-114 Hellfire is a widely utilized, short-range, air-to-ground (and occasionally air-to-air) missile. Known for its laser-guided precision, this subsonic tactical missile is a key component of the U.S. military’s arsenal and is also deployed by around 30 allied nations.

History and Purpose:
Development of the Hellfire began in 1972 to fulfill the U.S. Army’s demand for a helicopter-launched antitank missile, capable of neutralizing Soviet armor formations during the Cold War. Over time, the missile’s applications expanded to address modern combat requirements.

Target Profile:
The Hellfire is effective against a variety of targets, including armored vehicles, tanks, bunkers, radar installations, antennas, and
communication systems. It is also capable of engaging soft targets and low-hovering helicopters.

Use in UAVs:
The missile is frequently employed on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) such as the MQ-1B Predator, MQ-9 Reaper, and MQ-1C
Grey Eagle, making it a preferred choice for precision strikes.

Hellfire Romeo (AGM-114R): The Latest Advancement

The AGM-114R, also known as the Hellfire Romeo, represents the most advanced iteration of the Hellfire II series.
This version consolidates the capabilities of earlier models into a versatile missile, reducing the need for multiple
variants.

Platform Compatibility: The Hellfire can be launched from an array of platforms, including:

  • Helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft
  • Naval surface vessels
  • Ground-based military vehicles

Guidance and Warhead:
Equipped with a semi-active laser guidance system, the Hellfire Romeo offers precise target tracking. Its
integrated blast fragmentation sleeve warhead is capable of neutralizing multiple target types, enhancing mission
efficiency.
